Police Reform Information

Last June, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo issued Executive Order 203 directing every police agency statewide to submit a report with recommended reforms designed to modernize and strengthen its policies and procedures with an emphasis on addressing racial disparities in policing.

This past Friday, after months of research, review and gathering input from the community and key stakeholders, the Nassau County Police Department released the first draft of its police reform plan for public review and comment.  The 310-page working document contains 23 categories covering a wide variety of topics, including proposed changes involving the use of body cameras, vehicle stops, bias awareness training, use of force, and mental health response and intervention.

For those interested, the draft report can be accessed by visiting: www.nassaucountyny.gov/DocumentCenter/View/31611/Draft-with-Exhibits?bidId. More information can also be found at:  https://www.nassaucountyny.gov/EO203.

Public comment on the report can be made via email to: EO203@NassauCountyNY.Gov as well as through the following link: https://forms.nassaucountyny.gov/contact/agencies/ce/203comment.php. The public comment period will run through February 5, 2021.

Ultimately, in accordance with the executive order, the County Legislature is tasked with the adoption of the final police reform plan by April 1, 2021.  The ratified document will then be sent to the state.   If you would like your voice to be heard, now is the time to submit any suggestions, comments or recommendations to the County for consideration.

Supporting law enforcement and helping to ensure the safety and security of the citizens of Nassau County will always be one of my top priorities. I will be watching this process closely and will share any additional updates concerning this matter as it further unfolds.
