[ARCHIVED] Statement from Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Debra Mulé

(FREEPORT, N.Y.) – The following is a statement from Nassau County Legislature Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) –

I am dismayed by the indiscriminate ICE raids that are continuing to terrorize families across Nassau County and in my own backyard here in Freeport.

We all want safe communities, and no reasonable person would object to prosecuting and punishing those who endanger public safety – up to and including deportation after a case has been fully adjudicated.

That is not what is happening in Freeport, Roosevelt, Nassau County, or our nation.

Rounding up people without judicial warrants because they “look” undocumented is racial profiling. It makes us less safe and dangerously erodes the bedrock democratic principle of due process -– which everyone in America is entitled to, regardless of immigration status.

It is the latest act of intentional cruelty by an administration that uses the most vulnerable people in our society as political props. Their actions are making families afraid to send their children to school, go to work, or shop for groceries.

We are all God’s children – and many of these families fled war and tyranny in their homelands for a chance at a better life in America. I will continue to work with advocates and community leaders to ensure every family is treated with dignity, fairness, and respect.
