[ARCHIVED] Hempstead Man Indicted for Stabbing Two in Main Street Fight

Marvin Mejia charged for stabbing incident that left two men hospitalized.

MINEOLA, N.Y. – Acting Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced the indictment of a Hempstead man who is accused of stabbing two cousins outside a Main Street restaurant.

Marvin Mejia, 33, was arraigned today on the following grand jury charges:

• Two Counts of Assault in the 2nd Degree (a D violent felony)
• One Count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 4th Degree (an A misdemeanor)

Court of Claims Judge Philip Grella released Mejia on his own recognizance and orders of protections were issued for the two victims. The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office asked for bail of $50,000 bond or $25,000 cash. Mejia is due back in court on August 27. If convicted of the top charge, he faces a maximum of seven years in prison.

“This defendant is alleged to have brutally attacked and stabbed his two victims on Main Street in Hempstead,” said Acting District Attorney Madeline Singas. “We will not tolerate violence on our streets and will prosecute this case to the fullest extent of the law.”

Acting District Attorney Singas said that Mejia is accused of stabbing two victims, ages 32 and 38, after initiating an argument with them at a local bar. The victims went to a nearby restaurant but were followed by the defendant who stabbed one of the victims in the stomach with a knife outside the establishment. The first victim’s cousin heard the disturbance outside and attempted to intervene, but was stabbed in the stomach as well.

The defendant, who was in hit in the head with a belt by one of the victims who was trying to protect himself, checked into a local hospital with a head wound.

Nassau County Police Department Third Squad Detectives arrested Mejia at the hospital on May 11.

Assistant District Attorney Ilyssa Spergel of Acting DA Singas’ County Court Trial Bureau is prosecuting the case. Mejia is represented by Steve Gaitman, Esq.

The charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless found guilty.
