[ARCHIVED] Hempstead Man Sentenced to Ten Years in Prison for Stealing SUV, Video Games and Cash

Jarred Sowers, 21, woke victim up and robbed him at gunpoint

MINEOLA, N.Y. – Acting Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that a Hempstead man was sentenced today for robbing a 25-year old man in his bed at gunpoint and stealing electronics from him, as well as his car.

Jarred Sowers, pleaded guilty on September 14 to Robbery in the 1st Degree and Burglary in the 1st Degree (both B violent felonies).

Sowers was sentenced by Acting Supreme Court Justice Patricia Harrington to 10 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision.

“The defendant woke a sleeping man out of his bed, displayed a gun and then forced the victim to load his computer, a camera and two television sets into the victim’s Ford Explorer before he stole the car as well,” Acting DA Singas said. “Thankfully, he was apprehended by our law enforcement partners and now this ruthless defendant will spend ten years of his life thinking about his crime.”

Acting DA Singas said that on July 18, 2014, at approximately 5:50 am, the defendant entered a Hempstead home through a first floor window, went to the basement and confronted the victim, who was sleeping, with a black semi-automatic handgun and told him to “Give it up.” Sowers took the victim’s car keys, cellphone and money and then forced the victim to load his computer, a camera, a video game system with games, and two TVs into the victim’s black Ford Explorer that was parked in the driveway.

The defendant, while fleeing the scene in victim’s vehicle, ran over a bicycle that was in the driveway causing a tire to pop. Fifteen minutes later, Sowers was observed operating the Ford Explorer on three wheels by a Hempstead police officer. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the defendant fled and crashed into two parked cars and then ran away on foot. The Hempstead officer pursued the defendant on foot to the Sowers’ house and the building was surrounded by responding police personnel including the Nassau County Police Department K-9 unit. The defendant was discovered to be in the house, where he surrendered to NCPD.

Assistant District Attorney Martha Kousiaris of Acting DA Singas’ County Court Trial Bureau is prosecuting the case. Sowers is represented by Donald Rollock, Esq.
