David Nourmand, 32, pulled over two drivers in one day
MINEOLA, N.Y. – Acting Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that an Oyster Bay man was indicted on four counts related to a May 22 crime spree in which he impersonated a police officer in two vehicle stops and in a separate incident robbed another woman of her cellphone.
David Nourmand, 32, was arraigned today before Acting Nassau Supreme Court Justice Helene Gugerty on the following charges:
• Robbery in the 3rd Degree (a D felony)
• Two counts of Criminal Impersonation in the 2nd Degree (an A misdemeanor)
• Unlawful Imprisonment in the 2nd Degree (an A misdemeanor)
Judge Gugerty continued bail at $25,000 bond or $12,500 cash. If convicted of the top charge, Nourmand faces up to 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison. He is due back in court on Dec. 14.
“The defendant allegedly went on a one-man crime spree, impersonating a police officer twice in one day and senselessly robbing a woman of her cellphone,” Acting DA Singas said. “The defendant, by allegedly claiming to be a police officer, insulted the men and women who protect our County every day and put themselves in actual harm’s way.”
Acting DA Singas said that at approximately 1:20 a.m., on May 22, the defendant, driving in his white BMW SUV, pulled over a taxi driver who was transporting passengers on a fare. Nourmand, wearing a grey shirt, stated that he was a police officer and that he needed to see everyone’s identification in the taxi. The defendant told the occupants that “We are looking for a killer.” When someone in the car requested to see Nourmand’s identification as a police officer he fled.
At approximately 1:30 a.m. that morning, the defendant forcibly stole the cellphone of a woman who was outside a Westbury hotel.
That afternoon at 2 p.m. Nourmand was on the Northern State Parkway in a black SUV when he pulled in front of another motorist perpendicularly in the middle lane. As traffic passed them in the left and right lanes, the defendant got out of his vehicle and asked the victim to roll down her window. He identified himself as a police officer, asked her for her license and registration and told her to get out of the car. The victim gave Nourmand her license and registration, exited the vehicle and showed him what was in her trunk.
A passing motorist slowed down, asked what was going on and Nourmand fled.
The defendant was arrested by the Nassau County Police Department when he returned to the hotel where the robbery occurred. He was arraigned on May 23 for charges related to the first two crimes.
The third victim, after seeing media coverage of the defendant’s arrest, notified New York State Troopers, who arrested him for that crime. He was arraigned for the third crime on June 4.
Assistant District Attorney Michael Puma of Acting DA Singas’ County Court Trial Bureau is prosecuting the case. Nourmand is represented by David Stern, Esq.
The charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless found guilty.
