[ARCHIVED] Merrick Man Indicted for Aggravated Vehicular Assault

Gregory Lecrann was allegedly intoxicated and driving 112 MPH when he crashed into generator and injured passenger

MINEOLA, N.Y. – Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that an off-duty NYPD officer from Merrick was arraigned today on indictment charges related to an Oct. 9 crash in Wantagh, in which the defendant allegedly drove drunk in excess of 112 MPH and crashed into a generator, seriously injuring his passenger.

Gregory Lecrann, 29, was arraigned before Acting Supreme Court Justice Jerald Carter on charges of:

• Aggravated Vehicular Assault (a C felony)
• Assault in the 2nd Degree (a D violent felony)• Vehicular Assault in the 1st Degree (a D felony)
• Vehicular Assault in the 2nd Degree (an E felony)• Reckless Endangerment in the 2nd Degree (an A misdemeanor)
• Reckless Driving (an unclassified misdemeanor)• Operating a Motor Vehicle while Under the Influence of Alcohol (an unclassified misdemeanor)
• Aggravated Operating a Motor Vehicle while Under the Influence of Alcohol (an unclassified misdemeanor)

The defendant pleaded not guilty and he was released on his own recognizance. If convicted of the top count, the defendant faces up to 5 to 15 years in prison. He is due back in court on July 21.

“This defendant is accused of driving at more than 100 miles per hour while drunk on a busy Nassau highway,” said DA Singas. “We will prosecute this case aggressively because the conduct alleged here is outrageous, and put every driver and pedestrian in grave danger.”

DA Singas said that on Oct. 9, the defendant was driving while intoxicated with one passenger in his grey 2015 Nissan Altima on Sunrise Highway going into Wantagh Avenue in Wantagh. Lecrann, who was allegedly coming from a bar, was driving at speeds in excess of 112 miles per hour when he crashed into a generator and a utility pole in the center median of the roadway. The defendant’s passenger was injured in the crash and suffered serious physical injuries, including a broken femur and scarring.

The arrest is the result of a joint investigation of the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office and the Nassau County Police Department. The defendant surrendered this morning to the NCPD.

Assistant District Attorneys Christopher Casa and Patrick Brand of DA Singas’ Vehicular Crimes Bureau are prosecuting the case. Lecrann is represented by Kristin Gallison, Esq.

The charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless found guilty.
