Legislator Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) joined with Colette Coyne of the Colette Coyne Melanoma Awareness Campaign, devoted to educating both young and old on the importance of being Sun Smart, at the Vernon Elementary School in East Norwich. Jacobs, who has been very active in this effort for years, said that the children were extremely interested and verbal about being sun smart. "They were so knowledgeable, knowing the importance of wearing a hat, and a sun block shirt and using sun screen," said Jacobs, "I was very impressed and relieved to witness their awareness." They viewed a video geared for youngsters and Mrs. Coyne addressed them and explained that her own daughter died of Melanoma at thirty one years of age.
