MINEOLA, N.Y. – Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced that a Nassau County jury returned a guilty verdict today in the trial of a Brooklyn man accused of strangling a fellow inmate in the Nassau County jail in January 2012.
Charles Creekmur, 27, was found guilty today of Manslaughter in the 1st Degree (a B violent felony) in a trial before Nassau County Court Judge Meryl Berkowitz. The jury reached its verdict after three days of deliberation in a trial that lasted five days. Creekmur faces up to 25 years in prison, and is due back in court for sentencing on Aug. 21.
“I thank the jury for their time and their careful consideration of all of the evidence in this case,” DA Rice said. “My office will continue to prosecute violent crime, no matter where in our county it occurs.”
DA Rice said that on Jan. 7, 2012, Creekmur strangled Antwan Brown, 26, of Long Beach, in Brown’s second floor cell after a dispute at the Nassau County Jail in East Meadow. Nassau County Corrections officers arrested Creekmur shortly after the incident.
At the time of the incident, Creekmur was awaiting trial on robbery and weapons charges stemming from a July 2011 attempted holdup. Creekmur pleaded guilty to Attempted Robbery in the 2nd Degree (a D felony) and was sentenced by Nassau County Court Judge Jerald Carter in March 2012 to three years in prison.
