[ARCHIVED] GAYLOR, REPUBLICAN LEGISLATORS, INTRODUCE BILL CREATING OFFICE OF ASIAN AMERICAN AFFAIR

The Nassau County Legislative Majority announced the passage of a local law to establish an Asian American agency in Nassau County. In the past 10 years, Nassau’s Asian American community has grown now making up more than ten percent of the county’s population. Because of the growing population, it is necessary to create an agency within the county with an executive director, budget, and staff, to assist in providing Nassau County services to the community, cultivating possible business opportunities, providing feedback on issues facing the community, and how Nassau County policies impact Asian Americans. The agency will take the place of the “Asian American Advisory Committee” that currently operates without a staff or budget.

The Executive director will be appointed by the County Executive and approved by the Legislature.

“I am proud to stand with the Republican Legislative Caucus to announce the passage of a local law that will create a fully funded and staffed Asian American Agency,” Legislator C. William Gaylor III said. “In a county as diverse as Nassau, I am pleased to spearhead legislation allowing Asian Americans be further represented in county government. I look forward to continuing to work with leaders in the community, to provide them with the resources and opportunities they need to flourish.”

“Asian Americans hold a significant portion of Nassau County’s very diverse population, and this new agency will benefit us all greatly,” Dr. Isma Chaudhry, chairwoman of the Islamic center’s board of trustees, said. “Representation in government matters, and I look forward to working with this agency and all the Legislators to make sure Asian American’s are provided the resources and opportunities needed.”
