[ARCHIVED] County Executive Curran Raises Awareness of Hunger on Long Island

Nassau County, NY - In fulfilling a nationwide challenge to help those among us who can’t afford to buy food, County Executive Laura Curran has declared September Hunger Action Month to increase awareness about hunger and food insecurity on Long Island. County Executive Curran has also arranged for the dome of the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola to be illuminated in orange on September 12, Hunger Action Day, and she has coordinated the location of non-perishable food collection receptacles throughout County buildings, which will be distributed to Long Island Cares.

“I am pleased to once again partner with Long Island Cares in helping motivate and increase food pantry donations to ensure that no resident or family goes hungry or experiences food insecurity in Nassau County and across Long Island,” said County Executive Curran.

Every day, more than 280,000 Long Islanders, including 73,000 children, face the risk of going hungry every day. Hunger Action Month is an opportunity to spread the word about the critical and very real issue of hunger on Long Island. While hunger is a year-round concern, September is an opportunity encourage individual participation to help make sure that no one on Long Island goes without food.
