Nassau County, NY – Technology scammers have evolved and are getting savvier and more successful-- which is why Nassau County Executive Laura Curran is deploying the County’s brightest IT experts to locations across the county to offer free trainings for residents on how to combat cyber threats. To kick off Cybersecurity Awareness Month County Executive Curran recently announced the first round of “Tech Smart” seminars and gave a sneak peek into the workshop.
“No matter your age or tech ability, when you log onto the internet, you may be putting your identity, finances, and reputation at risk. These seminars are designed to inform you of hackers’ schemes, and to show how you can protect yourself — helping you be tech smart to stay tech safe,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran.
There is a hacking attack every 39 seconds, affecting 1 in 3 Americans every year. Locally, Nassau County Police Department cites 95 cybercrimes so far in 2019 – 42 being cases being classified as grand larceny. Cybersecurity has become a major concern for individuals, businesses and organizations across the County. “Tech Smart” will be another way for people to educate themselves in internet safety in order to protect themselves and their families from internet threats and hackers.
This training is designed for all ages and is focused just on cyber threats and scamming -- phishing, identity theft, viruses, ransomeware, malware and social engineering. Participants will learn how to protect themselves using the same methods that is employed the Nassau County IT department. The seminar is taught by volunteers from Nassau County’s IT department, who developed the seminar as well.
