[ARCHIVED] STATEMENT FROM NASSAU COUNTY EXECUTIVE LAURA CURRAN ON BAIL REFORM

MINEOLA, NY – The women and men of the Sheriff’s Department have worked diligently through this holiday season in coordination with various other agencies to ensure that the release of persons from the Correctional Center as a result of the bail reform legislation will be accomplished in a safe, controlled and organized manner. The Department currently anticipates approximately 29 releases to the community tomorrow as a result of the bail reform, 4 regular releases for completed sentences, and 4 hospital transfers for mental health evaluations. The releases will be processed during regular business hours and are expected to be completed by mid-afternoon. The total facility population today is 884. Earlier this year the population had been over 1,000 inmates. In addition to the increased NICE bus service on the N48 route, the Department has been informed that a local faith based organization will be providing transportation for any people who require assistance.
