[ARCHIVED] Drucker Thanks Rules Committee for Backing His Proposal to Provide Property Tax Relief for COVID

Legislator Drucker Thanks Rules Committee for Backing His Proposal to Provide Property Tax Relief for Surviving Family Members of
Health Care Workers, First Responders Who Succumbed to COVID-19

Legislator Drucker’s proposed local law now goes before the full Nassau County Legislature, which is scheduled to meet next on Monday Aug. 3.

(MINEOLA, N.Y.) - Members of the Nassau County Legislature’s Rules committee voted unanimously on Monday, July 13 to approve a local law, first proposed by Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D - Plainview), that gives surviving family members of health care workers and first responders who succumbed to COVID-19 relief from tax penalties and interest until early December of this year.

First filed by Legislator Drucker on June 3, 2020, the local law gives the families and estates of deceased qualified healthcare workers and first responders until Dec. 8, 2020 to pay their second half general property taxes without incurring late-payment penalties or added interest.

“Buoyed by their courage and commitment to public service, scores of frontline healthcare workers and first responders selflessly reported day after day to the front lines of Nassau County’s battle against COVID-19,” Legislator Drucker said. “Tragically, some of the individuals who were so instrumental in our efforts to overcome the darkest days of this pandemic themselves succumbed to the virus. Today’s action is an important step toward providing a measure of comfort and certainty for the families of our hometown heroes.”

Following the unanimous Rules committee vote, Legislator Drucker’s proposed local law now goes before the full Nassau County Legislature for final approval. The Legislature’s next scheduled meeting is Monday, Aug. 3.
