Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that the south phase seawall reconstruction along West Shore Road will begin October 15, 2014 and will be complete for the beginning of the 2015 summer tourism season. The work will address the approximately 2,000 linear feet of seawall and road from the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) trestle to Cleft Road. In addition, an approximately 1,000 foot section of the north end of West Shore Road - which was damaged by an early summer storm - will be repaired.

“This project is essential to both the safety of our residents as well as the local business community,” said County Executive Mangano. “This project will begin and end on schedule just as the previous phase did last year.”

From November 2012 to June 2013, 2,000 linear feet of the West Shore Road and its seawall, which had collapsed as a result of the brutal winds and waves of Superstorm Sandy, were repaired by Nassau County. The project was scheduled for 18-month duration, yet completed ahead of schedule. A full closing of West Shore Road, from the LIRR trestle to Cleft Road, is expected to take place from November 5, 2014 until March 2015. Intermittent closings will also occur throughout the duration of the project.

Work will include the construction of a shared use path - from Beekman Beach to the corner of Cleft Road - and utilities will be buried underground. Construction will be performed by A.L.A.C. The company’s contract was approved by the Nassau County Legislature after a competitive bidding process. A.L.A.C. also performed work in the first phase of the project. The cost for this phase is $9.5 million.

Community meetings outlining the project, including timelines and detour information, will take place on Tuesday, September 16th at 7:00 p.m. at the Crescent Beach Club in Bayville and Thursday, September 18th at 7:30 p.m., at the Italian-American Club in Oyster Bay. The meetings will be hosted by the Bayville Chamber of Commerce.
