(NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum (D - Great Neck) recently honored Samantha Coope, recipient of a scholarship sponsored by the Lakeville Estates Civic Association of New Hyde Park. Legislator Birnbaum presented a Nassau County Citation to her during the civic association’s barbecue and scholarship award ceremony on Saturday, June 8.
Ms. Coope, a New Hyde Park Memorial High School student plans to attend Adelphi University in the fall and pursue her goal of becoming a special education teacher. At New Hyde Park Memorial, she distinguished herself through her involvement in community service, high school sports and extracurricular clubs. She participated in the Best Buddies program, which paired her and her peers with students with special needs; volunteered with the iCanBike program and served at Adelphi’s Camp Abilities to help vision and hearing-impaired children participate in sports and other activities. Ms. Coope also volunteered for the Ronald McDonald House.
“Samantha’s passion for improving the lives of children - especially those with special needs - has shined brightly for the last four years at New Hyde Park Memorial High School. Her dedication has made a positive impact on countless lives, and I’m excited that she is charting a course toward continuing that work in her professional life,” Legislator Birnbaum said.
