Nassau County Comptroller Jack Schnirman Announces Receipt of $27,000
Credit from New York American Water in Response to Investigation of
Incorrect Billing

MINEOLA, NY – In July 2018, the Nassau County Comptroller’s Office identified a bill from New York American Water (NYAW) that increased by 40 times the usual amount, from $100 to more than $4,300, to provide service to the Lakeview Peace Garden. The County immediately stopped payment to NYAW pending an investigation by the Public Service Commission into similar increases for many residential customers. As a result of this comprehensive investigation, the County has received a credit of $27,000 from NYAW in November 2019.

“Incorrect billing resulted in the County incurring costs thousands of dollars more than it ever should have. Our residents already pay some of the highest utility costs in the country, and it is unfair to ask them to foot an additional bill for a utility company’s error,” said Nassau County Comptroller Jack Schnirman. “While this investigation successfully resolved this issue for the County, members of the public should know to study their personal utility bills to verify their accuracy, and that they have recourse if they discover an error. My office will continue to shine a light on this issue and ensure that taxpayers are not gouged by utility companies through unjust, onerous, and inconsistent rates.”
