What is a Speed Camera Enforcement Program?

Speed Camera Enforcement is a traffic safety program in which a municipality uses a state-of-the-art digital camera and violation detection system placed in areas where speeding is a consistent problem. The purpose is to decrease the number of speeding violations and reduce collisions. Each reduction in the number of violations issued by law enforcement officials indicates a decrease in the likelihood of speeding related collisions, associated injuries and fatalities resulting in safer roads.

How it Works –

As a vehicle passes the technology instrument, the speed is recorded. If the vehicle speed exceeds the posted speed limit by more than 10MPH, two images of the rear of the vehicle are taken. The date, time, speed and location of the violation is recorded on the digital image.

Nassau County’s Traffic and Parking Violations Agency reviews all possible violations. Using a violation processing application, certifying agents view the photos of a speeding vehicle event. If the event meets the County’s business rules, the event is passed along to the County for final review and approval. If an agency employee determines the vehicle was speeding, the employee verifies that the license plate matches the vehicle and all information is correct before issuing the notice of liability.

What is a School Speed Zone?

Enabling legislation defines "school speed zone" as a distance not to exceed one thousand three hundred twenty feet on a roadway passing a school building, entrance or exit of a school abutting on the roadway.

When is a School Speed Zone enforced?

The School Zone Speed Safety Program will monitor school zones from 7am to 6pm on school days

Why are speed cameras used?

Speeding is a leading cause of urban crashes and often causes injury and death. Local governments install speed camera systems to improve public safety by deterring speeding.

Speeding is in fact a deadly and costly problem on roadways:

  • Excessive speed is considered to be a major contributing factor to motor vehicle crashes.
  • 10,219 people died in speed related crashes in 2012, that’s more than 850 people each month or 28 people a day, on average.
  • Economic cost for speed-related collisions in 2010 is estimated at $59 billion, an average cost of $191 for every person in the U.S.

Where are the speed cameras located in Nassau County?

Speed cameras are used in school zones throughout Nassau County to deter speeding.

School zone cameras will detect vehicle presence and related speed up to one hour before and one hour after the school day. Cameras will also operate up to a half hour before and after student activities on school campuses. If a vehicle commits an alleged speeding violation, the school zone safety camera will take two photographs of the vehicle.
