[ARCHIVED] Maragos: Audit Finds Jones Beach Theater Owed $2,488 in Ticket Tax

Mineola, NY- Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos released his audit of the Entertainment Surcharge Tax from the Nikon-Jones Beach Theater, and found that the County was owed a total of $2,488 for the period January 1, 2012 to June 30, 2014. This amount represented complimentary tickets issued to media outlets. Beach Concerts Inc., who manages the theater, agreed with the findings and paid the outstanding tax in full.

“We are pleased that Beach Concerts Inc. admitted the oversight and readily paid the small tax it owed,” said Comptroller Maragos. “From the County’s perspective, we need to be more proactive and vigilant to ensure all corporations are paying their fair share of taxes so the burden does not fall unfairly on our homeowners.”

The audit found that 984 complimentary tickets issued to radio, television stations and media were not included on the Beach Concerts Inc.’s tax returns. In all other respect they were current with their tax payments.

The Theater having a permanent seating capacity of over 2,500 seats means they are required to pay Nassau County an Entertainment Surcharge Tax of $1.50 per seat sold for events. In response to the County, Beach Concerts Inc. agreed to pay the total amount owed and the Comptroller’s Office commends the corrective action taken by Beach Concerts Inc. The payment was received at the County Treasurer’s Office on June 22, 2015.
