[ARCHIVED] PR Water Conservation AUG 2015

Every Drops Count

Water is an important part of our environment in Nassau County.  We are surrounded by ocean, bays, ponds, streams and inlets.  Additionally, Nassau County sits just a few hundred feet above our drinking water aquifers.  It is critical that we protect the quality of our aquifers from pollutants.  The Nassau Legislature has created the Nassau County Water Resources Board to monitor Nassau’s groundwater resources.  Nassau has also joined with Suffolk County to create the Long Island Commission for Aquifer Protection to address aquifer quality and quantity issues for all Long Islanders.

Please help conserve and protect our water, and refer to the following tips from

Grassroots Environmental Education:

Conservation

  • Water lawns and gardens on even or odd days only, depending on your house number.
  • Water early in the morning, and never between 10 AM and 4 PM when evaporation rates are highest.
  • Don’t leave water running when washing cars.
  • Calibrate sprinkler systems to deliver no more than one inch of water per week.
  • Consider using water saving appliances and fixtures.

Protection

  • Pesticides and fertilizers leach into our aquifers. Switch to low nitrogen and water soluble fertilizers.
  • Do not dump household chemicals down drains, or dispose of used oil or other petroleum products in street drains, gutters or soil.
  • Don’t flush unused prescription medication down toilet.
  • Check septic systems and cesspools regularly.
  • Curb your pets and dispose of pet waste responsibly.
