[ARCHIVED] LEGISLATOR FERRETTI AND MAJORITY LEGISLATORS FORCE ADMINISTRATION TO SEND TAX IMPACT NOTICES

Nassau County Legislator John Ferretti and Majority Legislators are pleased to announce that homeowners will finally be receiving tax impact notices relating to the new assessed values created by the Curran Administration. The Legislators objected to an earlier notice sent by the Administration that was confusing and provided limited information.

The Legislature responded by passing a law that mandates that the Administration send a second notice informing homeowners of the tax impacts of the new assessed values. Initially, the County Executive and County Assessor objected to the legislation, but after public outcry the County Executive signed the legislation on November 14th at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building.

"Taxpayers have a right to know the impact that the Curran Assessment Plan will have on their taxes” Legislator Ferretti said. “It is disheartening that lawmakers had to introduce legislation to force the County Executive to do the fair, transparent thing and inform residents what their estimated impact will be. I will continue to demand that the Administration and Assessor provide residents with as much information as possible about how their assessed values were determined, what the tax impacts will be and what rights residents have in this process.”

Property owners should start to receive their tax impact notice on or after December 1st.   Residents who believe that their fair market values are too high, will have the right to file an assessment challenge beginning on January 2, 2019.
