2019-08-27 Presser Hurricane Prep OEM-7025

Nassau County, NY - With hurricane season in full swing and the 7th Anniversary of Superstorm Sandy approaching, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran was recently joined by Nassau County Office of Emergency Management Commissioner Steven Morelli and other Nassau County Public Safety and Emergency Response personnel to discuss important storm preparations and resources for residents.

County Executive Curran spoke about the preparations that the County makes in advance of a storm and discussed resources available to residents before, during and after a hurricane or emergency. Many of the County’s emergency assets were also on display.

“The County is ready for peak hurricane season, and we encourage our residents to prepare as well,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “The best time to prepare for a storm is when nothing is in the forecast – I urge all residents to get an emergency kit ready and make a plan with your family so you are prepared for any emergency.”

Emergency and public safety personnel from various County departments were also on hand to stress the importance of hurricane preparedness and give useful emergency tips to the public about topics such as animal safety, evacuations, family preparedness kits, emergency shelters and more. In attendance was Nassau County Office of Emergency Management, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Nassau County Police Department Commissioner Patrick Ryder, Nassau County Fire Marshal personnel, Department of Public Works, Department of Health, Department of Social Services and the County’s emergency animal response.

County Executive Curran is also coordinating with the State National Guard to offer hurricane preparedness courses in Nassau County for residents.

Since Superstorm Sandy, Nassau County has made several emergency preparedness improvements including adding Disaster Management Contractors and Disaster Monitoring Consultants to work with the Department of Public Works. Their services include debris removal, documentation and disposal throughout the event and cleanup.
