[ARCHIVED] Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan to Introduce the “Restaurant Protection Act”

The proposal would cap surcharges imposed by food-delivery apps many Nassau residents continue to rely heavily upon during the COVID-19 pandemic.

WHAT: In an effort to provide financial relief to Nassau County restaurants struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic, Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan (Woodbury) is introducing legislation that would limit the amount of fees third-party food delivery services charge local restaurants in Nassau County.

According to global market research firm The NPD Group Inc., third-party food delivery services, such as DoorDash, Uber Eats and Postmates account for 81 percent of the delivery app market share as of November 2020. These third-party food delivery services charge local restaurants to use their service for a percentage of each online order, some as high as 30 percent of the price of each online order. This places an undue financial burden on local food service providers during already challenging fiscal times.

Legislator Lafazan will discuss this legislative proposal alongside restaurant owners who will share first-hand accounts and evidence of how the onerous surcharges have impacted their businesses during the pandemic.

WHO: Legislator Lafazan will be joined by Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, (D – Glen Cove), a supporting co-sponsor of the measure; Rustan Lundstrum, owner of Coach Meeting House; and John Zozzaro, owner of Downtown Cafe in Glen Cove.
