NASSAU LEGISLATURE ANNOUNCES RESULTS OF COUNTY EXECUTIVE CURRAN'S REASSESSMENT

Mineola, New York – The 2020-2021 tax year was the first year of County Executive Laura Curran's reassessment. That year saw a record number of grievances by homeowners of the assessed value the Curran administration originally stated. Now, with the 2021-2022 tax year underway, we are seeing equally large numbers of grievances and settlements from the administration.

On July 12th, the Nassau County Legislature Majority Caucus held a press conference giving updated numbers on the County Executive’s reassessment:

- For the 2021-2022 tax year, 219,780 property owners out of 385,000 have filed a property tax grievance.

- 109,606 of those 219,780 property owners accepted settlements that reduced their assessed valuations.

- That means that 50% of all county property owners who ended up challenging their assessments accepted settlements that reduced their valuation. During the 2020-2021 tax year, this number was 26%, as the County granted appeals to 61,110 out of 236,372 property owners. That is a difference of 48,496 people winning assessments.

“The Newsday report that the County Executive’s Reassessment project failed to do what it was supposed to do,” Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello said. “The report shows that the county has returned to a mass settlement program. Combined with the assessment freeze the tax burden is once again being shifted to those who can least afford it. Nassau residents deserve better.”

“There is no clearer evidence that the County Executive's tax reassessment is a sham than the roughly 50 percent of taxpayers who filed grievances were successful. Laura's hidden tax increase has been exposed. She broke it and I will fix it," Hempstead Town Councilman Bruce Blakeman said. “Homeowners are overtaxed by Laura Curran's reassessment and the evidence shows that those fighting back have a 50% chance reducing their taxes due to unfair and incorrect assessments. The system is a sham and I will fix it.”
