[ARCHIVED] Student Found Guilty of Beating Dog to Death

Bing Jie Yang

Two-year old Pomeranian named Dan Dan died from blunt force trauma MINEOLA, N.Y. –Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that a jury found a Westbury man, accused of beating his two-year old Pomeranian to death, guilty of animal cruelty yesterday evening.

Bing Jie Yang, 24, a student from China studying in the United States, was found guilty of misdemeanor animal cruelty yesterday after a trial that lasted five days before Acting Supreme Court Justice Jerald Carter. The defendant is due back for sentencing on September 15 and faces up to one year in prison.

The jury deliberated for approximately three hours.

“The defendant mercilessly beat a small, defenseless dog and left the animal with broken ribs and severe internal injuries that killed him,” DA Singas said. “Crimes against animals will not be tolerated and we are grateful to the Nassau County SPCA for bringing us this case.”

“It was rewarding working with the DA’s office on this case and the work done to achieve prosecution needs to be applauded,” said Gary Rogers of the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “Animal cruelty is a very serious issue in Nassau County.”

DA Singas said that Yang repeatedly struck his two-year-old Pomeranian, named Dan Dan, after the animal had an accident in his Westbury apartment on April 7, 2015. After the beating, the defendant took the dog to a local veterinarian hospital, but efforts to revive Dan Dan were unsuccessful. Hospital staff then contacted the NCSPCA for an investigation into possible animal cruelty.

A joint investigation with NCSPCA and the NCDA Animal Crimes Unit, which included forensic analysis by the Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine Anatomic Pathology Section, determined that Dan Dan had suffered blunt force trauma about his body and suffered from fractured ribs, a fractured liver and internal bleeding.

Assistant District Attorney Alexander Lev of the NCDA Animal Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case. Yang is represented by Mingli Chen, Esq., and Mindy Plotkin, Esq.
