[ARCHIVED] East Rockaway Accountant Arrested for Failing to Pay more than $91,000 in Personal Income Taxes

Steven Ballin is accused of not paying his taxes for five consecutive years

MINEOLA, N.Y. – Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced the arrest of a certified public accountant from East Rockaway for allegedly failing to pay more than $91,000 in personal income taxes during the last five years.

BALLIN, STEVEN

Steven Ballin, 68, of East Rockaway, was arraigned yesterday before Judge Scott Siller and charged with four counts of Criminal Tax Fraud in the Third Degree (a D felony) and three counts of Repeated Failure to File Personal Income and Earnings Taxes (an E felony). The defendant was released on his own recognizance and is due back in court on May 30. If convicted, the defendant faces 2-1/3 years to seven years in prison.

“Cheating on taxes, as this CPA allegedly did, is a crime that victimizes every honest taxpayer,” DA Singas said. “My office will continue to work with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance to ensure that public funds are protected and everybody pays their fair share.”

“When a certified public accountant blatantly disregards the tax law, it’s a discredit to their profession and their law abiding colleagues,” said Acting Commissioner of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Nonie Manion. “We thank District Attorney Madeline Singas and her Economic Crimes Bureau for partnering with us on this case.”

DA Singas said following a joint investigation by the NCDA and NYS Department of Taxation and Finance, it was determined that the defendant allegedly failed to file NYS personal tax returns for tax years 2010-2014. After reviewing extensive records, it was determined that Ballin allegedly owes $91,901.00 in taxes to New York State.

Ballin obtained his CPA license in 1979 and is registered as an accountant though August 2017. His firm, Steven H. Ballin, C.P.A., P.C. is located in Valley Stream.

Assistant District Attorney Lauren S. Littman of DA Singas’ Economic Crimes Bureau is prosecuting the case. Ballin is represented by Richard Kestenbaum, Esq.

The charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless found guilty.
