[ARCHIVED] Legislator Muscarella would like to offer tips to help keep trips to the beach as safe as can be

beach safety

Few things scream “summer” to Long Islanders more than soaking up some rays with the scent of salt water in the air and sand between your toes. But it’s not all about fun in the sun!

A beautiful day at the beach can turn into tragedy in a matter of minutes due to a rogue wave or deadly rip currents. While most bad beach days end with little more than a sunburn, serious injuries and fatalities are more common than we’d like to believe.

Nassau County Legislator Vincent Muscarella would like to offer some tips to help keep trips to the beach as safe as can be for you and your family.

  • Swim in an area monitored by lifeguards and always obey all signal flags.
  • Ask Lifeguards about water conditions.
  • Always swim in groups and avoid secluded beaches.
  • Know basic water safety, and how to avoid and survive dangerous situations like rip currents.
  • Be aware of the tidal cycles and marine life in the area in which you are swimming.
  • Avoid the water at night, dawn or dusk.
  • Avoid wearing shiny jewelry in the water.
  • Don't swim in waters being fished or around fishing piers.
  • Don't dive. Go feet first.
  • Know your swimming ability and stay close to shore.
  • Never turn your back to the waves.
  • Swim with care near sandbars or drop-offs.
  • Never leave children unattended.
