East Meadow, NY – Each year, during the summer months, there is a shortage of food in local food pantries and other feeding programs. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran joined Island Harvest Food Bank to conduct food distribution of more than 25,000 pounds of food to approximately 30 non-profit agencies including soup kitchens, food pantries, and other feeding programs in Nassau County.
“Island Harvest is an invaluable resource to the more than 300,000 Long Island residents classified as food insecure,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “I applaud Randi Shubin Dresner and the team at the Island Harvest Food Bank whose work, year-after-year, provides a much-needed resource to Long Island residents who may be struggling.”
“For many families already struggling to make ends meet, life gets more expensive over the summer,” says Randi Shubin Dresner, president & CEO, Island Harvest Food Bank. Shubin Dresner said food-insecure families provide the evening meal during the school year now must come up with breakfast and lunch for their children over the summer. “An additional burden is on the parents’ already stretched budget, and that’s difficult for many families,” Shubin Dresner said of food-insecure children and families. Food-insecurity is a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life.
