[ARCHIVED] Nassau County Executive Laura Curran Statement

Mineola, NY -- My Administration promotes the use of Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grants to improve school conditions and increase academic and enrichment opportunities for our students.

We do not support use of these funds for the purchase of firearms and firearm training in our schools.

Here in Nassau County, our Police Department has made school safety a top priority and is the best equipped to respond to any school emergency. At my direction and under the leadership of Commissioner Patrick Ryder, NCPD is proactively collaborating with the County’s 56 school districts to implement the School Resource Program and connect districts to the RAVE App. Both initiatives greatly reduce response times in the event of an incident, and together increase student safety through effective training and real-time communication to first responders. Every penny of federal grants should go towards our children’s educational enrichment, not towards bringing firearms into their classrooms.
