[ARCHIVED] Statement from County Executive Curran on ICE Personnel Location

MINEOLA – Nassau County Executive Laura Curran today issued the following statement regarding the location of ICE personnel in Nassau County:

“With the federal government reopened, I was able to speak with ICE personnel today about their plan for a more permanent location. We agreed that personnel will remain at their current location in the trailer at the jail, pending their proposal for a new trailer away from the visitors’ center.

ICE has previously requested that their trailer be relocated on the Corrections Center property. I will meet with community groups to continue to hear their concerns.

I made the phone call to ICE today based on the concerns I’ve heard over the past few days about ICE using a temporary location at one of NUMC’s extra buildings. Community groups contacted me to say the move might impact access to healthcare.

There have been no deportation incidents in NUMC’s history – and I was confident the temporary field office’s location was separate and apart from patients and visitors. However, I want to ensure that our immigrant community knows they can use NUMC without any worries.

We will continue to fight crime, and work with our federal partners including ICE, while we remain committed to community policing methods to build trust in all our neighborhoods.”
