[ARCHIVED] STATEMENT FROM LEGISLATOR MUSCARELLA ON THE FAILURE OF THE ELECTED ASSESSOR OVERRIDE VOTE

ldPRE

After the Legislature passed a bill mandating a referendum on whether or not the residents want an elected or politically appoint assessor, the County Executive decided to veto the legislation, taking the voice away from Nassau County residents. Today, the Legislature voted to override the County Executive’s veto. Unfortunately, Minority Caucus legislators chose to side with the County Executive over the taxpayers they were elected to serve.

Following a party line vote, the override was voted down.

Legislator Muscarella offered the following:

“The Majority Caucus of the Legislature has been determined to give residents a strong voice during the reassessment process. One step we took was to put a referendum up in November that allowed residents to choose if they wanted an elected or appointed assessor. Unfortunately, the County Executive and Minority Caucus has decided to not allow residents to have that choice, and have protected politically appointed assessor David Moog. He has refused to hold any public town hall meetings and will not answer questions on the process. Despite today’s vote, I will continue to fight for the taxpayers of Nassau County and continue to push for further accountability and transparency.”
