TRAVEL ADVISORY: NEW TRAFFIC PATTERN SCHEDULED FOR
BAY BOULEVARD AT NASSAU EXPRESSWAY INTERSECTION
Motorists should expect a new traffic pattern on Bay Boulevard near Route 878 (Nassau Expressway) in the town of Hempstead, Nassau County.
Beginning on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 11, all traffic on Bay Boulevard will be shifted onto a temporary roadway between Rockaway Turnpike and Rason Road. The number of travel lanes on Bay Boulevard will not be reduced and dedicated left turning lanes in each direction to Route 878 will also remain.
Variable message signs have been placed in the area to guide and alert motorists. This configuration is expected to remain in place for approximately two months.
Construction of the new northbound roadway of Route 878 continues as part of the $130 million New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) project to enhance the safety and operation of Nassau Expressway between Rockaway Turnpike and Burnside Avenue, as well as improve the resiliency of the roadway as an Emergency Coastal Storm Evacuation Route.
As with most road projects, work may be cancelled, postponed or prolonged due to inclement weather.

Motorists are urged to slow down and safely move over when approaching roadside vehicles displaying red, white, blue, amber or green lights, including maintenance and construction vehicles in work zones. Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in work zones. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.
