MINEOLA, NY -- Nassau County Executive Laura Curran last night hosted the New York Islanders organization, four-time Stanley Cup winner Butch Goring, and Isles fans to celebrate a new season with more games on Long Island and the team's breaking ground on a new home in Nassau County. In honor of the Islanders' first game of the season tonight against the Washington Capitals at NYCB Live Coliseum and the Islanders commitment of its future to Nassau County, County Executive Curran has proclaimed October 4th, 2019 "Islanders Day."

"The Isles hold a special place in our heart in Nassau County. We’re thrilled that the team is playing more games in Nassau this year, and even more so that we’ve finally broken ground on a new state-of-the-art home at Belmont. Thank you to the Islanders organization and all the fans who joined us last night to celebrate the good news and the new season. Happy Islanders Day, and let’s rock the barn tonight!” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran.

A little rain last night didn't stop fans from joining County Executive Curran, Butch Goring, four-time Stanley Cup winner with the Islanders and color commentator for games on MSG, Travis Williams, President of Business Operations for the New York Islanders, and Isles Mascot Sparky to celebrate the team and light the County Dome at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative blue and orange.

Ahead of their first game of the season tonight and the team’s breaking ground at Belmont and a new future in Nassau County, County Executive has officially proclaimed October 4th 2019 “Islanders Day” in Nassau County.

Last month, County Executive Curran joined with Governor Andrew Cuomo, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, and the New York Islanders to break ground on the Islanders' new arena at Belmont Park, the centerpiece of the $1.3 billion Belmont Park Redevelopment that will bring the New York Islanders back to Nassau County for good. In addition, Governor Cuomo announced the team has agreed to play 28 regular season games at the Nassau Veteran's Memorial Coliseum during the 2019-2020 season, seven more than previously planned.

Other officials in attendance at the Dome-Lighting Rally included Senator Anna Kaplan, Senator Kevin Thomas, Assemblyman Ed Ra, Comptroller Jack Schnirman, Town of Oyster Bay Clerk James Altadonna, Nick Vaerewyck SVP of Programming and Business Operations at NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
