[ARCHIVED] COUNTY CLERK O’CONNELL: NASSAU COUNTY SCAR FILING PERIOD DELAYED

(Mineola, NY) Due to the current pandemic, and in accordance with orders issued by the Governor and New York State’s Chief Judge, the Nassau County Clerk is unable to accept SCAR (Small Claims Assessment Review) filings at this time. In an effort to protect her staff and the residents her office serves, County Clerk Maureen O’Connell will comply with these orders. Clerk O’Connell understands the important impact these filings have on so many residents. She wants to assure all homeowners that when the state and the courts open the filing period, the Nassau County Clerk’s office will be ready to process SCAR filings on their behalf.

Homeowners are eligible to file a SCAR petition through the County Clerk’s office if their initial property tax grievance was denied by the Assessment Review Commission. This appeal allows the homeowner to file a court challenge to the denial of their initial grievance. The County filing period is traditionally during the month of April. Given the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, the state and the courts have deemed these filings non-essential. They will designate a future filing period for the County Clerk to again accept these filings. Please note that any information received from other county agencies advising residents to file SCAR petitions with the County Clerk through April is outdated.

Please monitor the County Clerk’s website at https://www.nassaucountyny.gov/458/County-Clerk for updates on when the filing period will be. While New York State has delayed the opening of the SCAR filing period, petition forms and instructions are still available on the Clerk’s website to print and prepare at home. In the meantime, County Clerk O’Connell, who is also a registered nurse, wishes all residents to stay safe during these unprecedented times.
