[ARCHIVED] Nassau County Announces AAPI Heritage Month Events

MINEOLA, NY – Throughout the month of May, Nassau County is hosting a series of events to celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and the Office of Asian American Affairs (OAA) will honor the AAPI community of Nassau County in a series of cultural and informational events as well as a social media campaign featuring community youth organizations.

“This Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Nassau County is recognizing the contributions, culture, and achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans, while highlighting the many services and resources available for residents. I thank Executive Director Farrah Mozawalla, the Office of Asian American Affairs, and our OAA Council for putting together this informative program of events,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran

“We are excited to not only highlight and celebrate our AAPI community but also provide resources to uplift the community,” said Executive Director of the Office of Asian American Affairs, Farrah Mozawalla. 

The Office of Asian American Affairs is hosting the following events in May to further support local businesses, provide County resources and showcase the incredible heritage, diversity and resilience of Nassau’s  AAPI community. 

  • Youth Spotlight Features: Each week, OAAA will release a new spotlight featuring community youth organizations who inspire and lead on its social media channels (www.Facebook.com/NassauCountyOAA and www.Twitter.com/NassauCountyOAA). 
  • Business Community Webinar: The Business Resource Webinar in Recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month will be held on May 19th at 6:30 PM. This virtual program, a collaboration with the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency (IDA), will outline IDA programs and incentives, as well as business resources offered by the County.
  • Eid Food Drive-Thru Collaboration:  To mark the Eid holiday, OAAA will host a drive-thru event in which pre-packaged ethnic cuisine boxes will be given out to 600 cars. The event, which will take place in Eisenhower Park on May 21 at 6:30PM, is  sponsored by PACOLI, Long Island Halal Guide, Shia Ithna-Asheri Jamaat of NY, New York South Asian Chamber of Commerce, Herricks Muslim Families, COPUR and the Afghan Americans of New York. 
  • “Know Your Rights” Webinar: OAAA will host an educational webinar on Thursday, May 27th at 6:30 P.M to connect attendees with County agencies and local organizations which offer nuanced, language-accessible help in cases like domestic violence, healthcare access, and civil rights. A representative from each organization will introduce their respective services and tip lines. Some of the organizations featured will the NC Human Rights Commission, NC Crime Victim Advocacy Unit, CAAAV, Asian American Federation, and Domestic Harmony Foundation. This virtual event will be broadcasted on OAAA’s official Facebook and YouTube channel.
  • Restaurant Visits: The County Executive will join OAAA to visit  local Asian restaurants that received  a Restaurant Recovery Grant from Nassau County. This grant. The visit will promote the Restaurant Recovery Grant Program, which provides a lifeline to businesses that were hit hard during the pandemic as well  as  showcase the diverse cuisine in Nassau County. The visits to the restaurants will be shared on OAAA’s social media.
