(PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum (D - Great Neck) proudly attended the Town of North Hempstead’s 28th annual Women's Roll of Honor Breakfast at the Harbor Links Golf Course on Wednesday, June 16. During the ceremony, Legislator Birnbaum presented Nassau County Citations to Ann Tountas and Farhana Islam in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the Town of North Hempstead and the 10th Legislative District.

Farhana Islam is a full-time pharmacist who works at the Parker Jewish Institute. A mother of three children in the Sewanhaka Central High School District, she played an integral role in adding Eid to the school district’s holiday calendar. In addition, she is very involved in community service and serves as a Digital Strategist and Creative Director of Muslims for Progress, is active in the Long Island Progressive Coalition, and mentors aspiring chefs through a series of home cooking classes.

Ann Tountas has been a New Hyde Park resident since 1974. Her involvement includes service as a Co-President of the Herricks Council of PTAs; past President of the Herricks Community Fund; and founding member of the Community Coalition.  She also worked at Our Space - the Herricks Alzheimer’s Day Program for 25 years and retired as the director of the program. She remains as an advocate for seniors and is a member of a number of community organizations pertaining to the arts and education.

“Farhana Islam and Ann Tountas have enlightened and uplifted the residents of the Town of North Hempstead and the 10th Legislative District through their dedicated service,” Legislator Birnbaum said. “It was my pleasure to recognize these outstanding women for the important contributions they have made toward strengthening the fabric of our community.”
