MINEOLA, NY – Nassau County Executive Laura Curran was today joined by local seniors and businessowners to once again call on the Legislative Majority in the Nassau County Legislature to approve County Executive Curran’s plan to send $375 direct payments to up to 400,000 households in Nassau County. The plan (“Household Assistance Program”), which utilizes American Rescue Plan funding provided to Nassau County, was introduced by County Executive Curran 62 days ago. The Legislative Majority has repeatedly stalled passage of the Household Assistance Plan and today again delayed any potential vote on the legislation until Monday.

“I am (once again) calling on the Legislative Majority to approve $375 checks for our Seniors, our Veterans, and middle- and working-class households. This continued stalling is pure politics – and it’s preventing help from getting to those who need it most. Nassau County’s finances are in the best shape they have been in years due to my Administration’s responsible budgeting and fiscal discipline. Having achieved a hard-earned budget surplus for the County, I will remain committed to getting federal relief funds out the door help to help residents in need and stimulate our local economy,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran

“For weeks the Majority has had multiple opportunities to provide thousands of middle-class families with some financial relief. With a bit of relief, $375 could help a family put food on their table. However, the Majority continues to put politics over people by delaying these payments,” said Minority Leader of the Nassau County Legislature Kevan Abrahams

“I want to thank our County Executive for her stellar leadership, particularly during this pandemic, and I want to emphatically state to all the stakeholders: pass this bill. $375 may not mean a lot to some of you, but for our elderly population and vulnerable persons, $375 can make a difference. It can buy groceries and it can assist in the economic recovery of our County,” said Bishop Frank Anthone White, a Senior Pastor of Zion Cathedral in Freeport.

“I do hope this bill gets passed because we want to get our economy back on track, and an extra bit of money in people’s pockets will help our local businesses,” said Belinda Watkins, Hempstead Chamber of Commerce Director

Also joining the County Executive today were members of the Curran Administration working on economic development and getting relief to residents.
