Legislator Steve Rhoads and the Nassau County Department of Public Works have announced that road work will be commencing on Wantagh Avenue in Wantagh, between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road to alleviate issues that are causing vibrations. These vibrations in the sub-concrete have been a nuisance to those that live around and make use of the roadway.
The Department of Public Works (DPW) had previously performed a full inspection of the roadway and its sub-surface to determine the origin of the vibrations. They found that below the asphalt surface of Wantagh Avenue is the original concrete roadway, and on top was an asphalt overlay. The seams between the concrete panels were originally sealed to prevent shifting. Over time, the seals between the panels deteriorated, resulting in the movement of the panels and bumps in the asphalt surface. Further, due to the substantial truck traffic on the road, more deterioration has occurred.
Beginning on November 7th, 2022, barring any inclement weather, the Department of Public Works will begin work to fix this issue. The work will include: the milling of the roadway; the repairing of the underlying concrete and the panel seals; and the creation of a brand-new asphalt overlay. The work will be paid for out of funds identified from this year’s County budget due to the emergency nature of the problem.
“I have heard from numerous residents around the Wantagh Avenue area about the problems of this roadway and the nuisance it is creating for those both driving on it and living nearby it,” Legislator Steve Rhoads said. “Working with the administration, I have been able to obtain emergency funds to begin the repaving of this roadway ASAP. By the end of this year, the people of Wantagh will have a brand-new paved roadway to drive on.”
