Earlier today, the Nassau County Legislative Majority called for a vote to override the County Executive’s veto of common-sense amendments to the county budget. Upon the Minority failing to provide the two necessary votes to override the County Executive’s vetoes, Presiding Officer Rich Nicolello offered the following:
"I am disappointed that the Minority Caucus voted to uphold the County Executive’s vetoes of our common-sense amendments to the county budget. These amendments would have given our police officers training and resources to deal with active shooters, provided real enforcement of under-age vaping and smoking laws, improved county roads and parks, reduced delays on opening new small businesses and provided critical funding for veterans services. Instead of putting our tax dollars back into our community, the Minority Caucus and County Executive chose to put hundreds of thousands of dollars into the hands of their patronage hires the County Attorney’s office and in positions like "Liaison to the Receiver of Taxes". The Majority will continue to do everything we can to give our residents, law enforcement, and veterans the resources they need to thrive in Nassau County."
Amendments VETOED by the County Executive and Upheld by Minority Caucus:
- Add additional positions to provide the Department of Public Works with additional staff to provide more resources to repave, roads, conduct traffic studies and maintain county-owned lands in our communities. VETOED
- Add additional Fire Marshall positions to expedite the review and approval of fire systems to allow new and existing businesses to open or expand and add jobs to our economy. VETOED
- Increase the number of Police Medics within the Emergency Ambulance Bureau to ensure our residents continue to have the best possible emergency response. VETOED
- Restore positions in the Department of Health and Consumer Affairs to provide more resources to prevent and reduce youth vaping and tobacco use. VETOED
- Train police patrol officers to use weapons so that they are prepared to deal with active shooter situations. VETOED
