MINEOLA, NY: In an effort to protect our pets and prevent the spread of rabies, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Nassau County Department of Health are partnering with the Town of Oyster Bay to offer free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets. Open to all Nassau County residents, the vaccination clinic will be held on Saturday, September 9th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter located at 150 Miller Place in Syosset. No reservations are necessary.
“I am excited to partner with Town of Oyster Bay to offer a free Rabies vaccination clinic for Nassau pets.” said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. “This clinic will provide an excellent opportunity for residents to come out, make sure their pets are safe and up to date with their rabies vaccinations to stay protected!” Blakeman continued.
“Rabies vaccination for dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets is required by New York State law,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Irina Gelman. “Making sure your pet is up-to-date on their rabies vaccination helps protect people from potential exposure to this deadly virus and eliminates the need your pet to be euthanized or strictly quarantined for six months in they come in contact with animals that are known to carry and transmit the virus. This Fall, to protect your family and your pets, please check their rabies vaccine status and if not current take them to their veterinarian or one of the rabies vaccine clinics in Nassau County.”
It is recommended for dogs, cats, and ferrets older than four months to receive their first two shots one year apart and additional booster shots every three years thereafter. Dogs must be on a leash at all times and cats and ferrets must be in enclosed carriers. Microchip services will also be available for a $25 fee.
