Grant Park

Grant Park, part of the Nassau County park system since 1955, is located in the southwest part of the county. The 35-acre park offers the following activities:

Athletics/Physical Activities:

  • There are three basketball courts;
  • four tennis courts;
  • and four handball/paddleball courts;
  • Athletic fields include three baseball and softball fields as well as soccer fields (permit required).
  • There are paths for joggers, bicyclists and for strolling.

Family/Kids:

  • A modern playground area is designed with three areas for three separate age groups: pre-schoolers, 4-to-8 year olds and 9-to-12 year olds. There is also a spray-pool area.
  • Unreserved and reserved picnic areas include barbecue equipment (Leisure Pass and fee required for reserved areas; call 516-571-7821).
  • An outdoor roller rink is available for public and charter sessions on Saturday and Sunday from 12:30 to 3 p.m. from spring to early fall.
  • In the winter, the roller rink is transformed into a skating rink open seven days a week, including evenings on weekends, with public and charter sessions; lessons are also available, along with a skate rental.
  • A sled hill is open in the winter, when weather conditions cooperate.

Skating:

  • The Grant Park ice skating rink is scheduled to open Dec. 5, 2008, weather permitting, and remains open through March 1, 2009. Skating lessons, ice charters for groups, hockey game rentals and private rentals are also available.
  • Hours: Three two-hour morning/day sessions Wednesday through Sunday days a week at 10 a.m., 12:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.; and two-hour evening sessions on Friday at 8:30 p.m.
  • Fees (daily): Resident adult with Leisure Pass, $7; resident teenager 13-17 years of age with Leisure Pass, $5; resident child 12 and under accompanied by adult with Leisure Pass, $5; senior, disabled, vol. firefighter, ambulance corps, auxiliary police, veterans with Leisure Pass, $4; adult without Leisure Pass, $14, child without Leisure Pass, $10. Skate rentals are available for $5.

Fishing:

  • The lake at Grant Park is open for fishing; visitors can also take a pleasant walk or jog around the lake, on a concrete path.

Directions:


To reach Grant Park, take the Southern State Parkway to Exit 19 South (Peninsula Boulevard). Continue down Peninsula Boulevard for approximately 5 miles, through Rockville Center and Lynbrook (approximately 1 mile past Sunrise Highway) to Rockaway Avenue (sign says Grant Park left). Make a left turn onto Rockaway Avenue and follow the road around to the traffic light on Broadway. Go past that light onto Sheridan Avenue. Park entrance will be on the right just past the police station.

Skaters Still Have Time to Enjoy Nassau County's Outdoor Skating Rinks

There are still a few days left to practice your swizzles and crossovers under the crisp winter air at Nassau County’s two outdoor skating rinks, at Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn-North Hills and Grant Park in Hewlett, announced Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi.

The Grant Park rink remains open through March 1 while Christopher Morley’s rink is open through March 8.

The Christopher Morley rink offers three two-hour day sessions daily beginning at 10:30 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 4 p.m., and one two-hour session evenings on Friday and Saturday beginning at 8:30 p.m. and Thursday at 6:45 p.m. Christopher Morley is a hilly, tree-lined 98-acre park located on Searingtown Road (Exit 36 north of the L.I.E). In its final weekend, the two-hour sessions at the Grant Park rink begin at 10 a.m., 12:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., with one session Friday evening at 8:30 p.m. Grant is a beautiful 35-acre park nestled in a residential area by Broadway and Sheridan Avenue. For information, call 516-571-7821.

At both parks, group and private skating lessons are available, as well as ice charters for groups, hockey games and private rentals. Patrons may also rent skates. Skating fees range from $4 to $14, depending upon the age of the patron and whether or not one is a Leisure Pass holder and county resident.

Once the outdoor rinks close, skaters can still enjoy the beautiful indoor rink at Cantiague Park in Hicksville, open daily. For information, call 516-571-7058.

 


Roller Hockey Rinks Available at Three County Parks

Nassau County is accepting requests for charter time at roller hockey rinks located in three parks, announced Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi. The rinks are open to teams as well as groups seven days a week.

The roller hockey rinks are located in the following parks:

  • Bay Park, on First Avenue in East Rockaway (571-7245);
  • Grant Park, at Broadway and Sheridan in Hewlett (571-7821);
  • and Inwood Park, at the end of Bayview Avenue in Inwood (571-7894).

Fees are $30 for a single session and $25 per session for multiple use (minimum usage: three times).
