[ARCHIVED] Mangano: County Department of Health Receives National Awards

Mineola, NY – The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) honored the Nassau County Department of Health (NCDOH) at their 2014 Annual Conference for implementing programs that demonstrate exemplary qualities in response to local public health needs. The Environmental Health Residential Development Protection Program was one of 22 local health department programs across the nation to receive NACCHO’s prestigious Model Practice Award. NCDOH’s Bureau of Minority Health was also honored with a Promising Practice Award for an initiative to implement dietary changes in communities at high risk for obesity and chronic diseases due to poor dietary habits.

“I congratulate the Department of Health and Commissioner Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein for being national leaders in public health”, said County Executive Mangano. “The Nassau County Department of Health has consistently been recognized for their leadership and innovative approach to addressing public health needs that protect the health and safety of the residents of Nassau County.”

The goal of the Environmental Health Residential Development Protection Program is to assure that all residential developments in Nassau County are served by an approved public water supply system, an approved public sewer or on-site sewage disposal system, and are constructed in an environment that is free of public health hazards. These goals are achieved by the review and approval of realty subdivision maps and engineering plans for water supply and sewage disposal facilities and by reviewing environmental site assessments and requesting investigation and remediation of environmental hazards.

Nassau County Department of Health has received four out of the 59 NACCHO Model Practice Awards earned in the past two years. The three awards last year equaled the highest number awarded to any local health department in the United States.
