Nassau County Department of Health Issues Advisory Against Bathing at 4 Beaches

Nassau County, NY – Due to heavy rainfall, the Nassau County Department of Health is issuing an advisory against bathing at 4 beaches, effective today, August 17, 2026.  This advisory is issued as a precautionary measure for beaches known to be impacted by stormwater runoff caused by heavy rainfall. Stormwater runoff can impact bathing water quality by elevating bacteria levels, which may cause exceedances of the New York State standard for bathing water quality.

*4 South Shore Beaches within Nassau County:
Island Park Beach – Island Park
Hewlett Point Beach - East Rockaway
Philip Healey Beach - Massapequa
Biltmore Beach Club - Massapequa

*This advisory will be lifted at 8 a.m., on Tuesday August 18, unless there is additional heavy rainfall or water samples reveal elevated bacterial levels.

In addition, Theodore Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay remains closed to bathing due to elevated bacterial levels. This beach will remain closed until testing indicates that samples are within acceptable limits.

To speak with a Health Department representative, weekdays, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., call (516) 227-9717.

For up-to-date recorded information on beach openings and closings, call (516) 227-9700.
