CANTIAGUE PARK HAS BEEN PART OF the county park system since 1961 and is centrally located in Hicksville, just off the Northern State Parkway and east of the Wantagh State Parkway. When the park opened, it represented the second major park the County managed, in addition to Eisenhower Park, and was a response to the needs of a growing County population. It was also the first park offering a swimming pool and an artificial skating rink. This 127-acre park offers the following activities:

Athletics/Physical Activities:

  • There are five lighted tennis courts (Leisure Pass and fee required);
  • six lighted handball/paddleball courts;
  • and three lighted basketball courts.
  • Athletic fields, lighted for night play, include four softball fields and four multi-sport fields (two lighted). Soccer, football, lacrosse and rugby are played on the multi-sport fields. All sports fields require permits and fees (Leisure Pass required; call 516-572-0248).
  • In the summer of 2008, the park opened a new and beautiful artificial turf field that accommodates football, soccer and lacrosse and is lighted for night play.

Family/Kids:

  • A renovated 18-hole miniature golf course is a popular attraction for children and families. Fees: $7, adults; $4, children & seniors. .
  • A playground provides activities for children of varying ages, from pre-schoolers to teens.
  • There are two reserved picnic areas (Leisure Pass required and fee; to reserve, call 516-571-7056) and one non-reserved family area.

 Golf

  • Cantiague features a 9-hole, par-30 golf course. The course is 1,878 yards, with holes ranging from 150 yards to 272 yards.

Ice Rink at Cantiague ParkIce Skating

  • Cantiague’s indoor ice skating rink is a magnificent facility that is used by recreational skaters and hockey teams. The rink has also played host to Olympic gold medalists such as Nancy Kerrigan, who performed there in 2004, and was the New York Islanders (National Hockey League) practice facility from 1979 to 1992. Skating lessons are available, as is a skate rental. Ice rentals are also available on weekdays until 3 p.m., with fees of $325 per hour for proprietary groups and $295 for nonprofits. The rink also has a snack bar and bleacher seating. A fee is charged at the rink.

Swimming:

  • The swimming pool complex, named by News12 Long Island viewers as the best outdoor swimming facility on Long Island, includes an Olympic-sized pool, two water slides, a diving pool, a “kiddie” pool, a training pool and an interactive water-play area. Lockers, showers and a refreshment area are located near the pool. Fee required, with Leisure Pass holders eligible for a discount. The pool will open for the 2009 summer season on June 29.
  • Hours: Mon.-Sun., 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
  • Fees (daily): resident adult with Leisure Pass, $7; resident child with Leisure Pass (4-17 years of age), $5; senior, disabled, vol. firefighter, ambulance corps auxiliary police, veterans with Leisure Pass $3; non-resident adult, $20, non-resident child guest, $15. Family ($225), individual ($90) and senior ($50) memberships are also available. A Leisure Pass is required for residents to receive the resident rate.

Other Activities:

  • In the gaming area next to the playground, there are shuffleboard courts, a bocci court, and tables with inlaid chess and checker boards.

Directions:

To reach Cantiague Park, take the Long Island Expressway to Exit 41 South (Broadway). Take fork (106/107) to West John Street. Turn right onto West John and proceed to Cantiague Park. The entrance is on your right.

Take the Southern State Parkway to Exit 29 North (Hicksville Road). Proceed approximately 3-5 miles into Hicksville. Turn left onto West John Street and proceed to Cantiague Park. The entrance is on your right.

Nassau County Outdoor Pools to Open for Summer Season on June 29

Four of Nassau County’s outdoor swimming pool complexes will open on Monday, June 29, announced Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi. The outdoor pools at Nickerson Beach Park are scheduled to open on June 20.

The County’s pool complexes include three comprehensive “water theme” facilities at Cantiague Park in Hicksville (571-7056), North Woodmere Park (571-7800) and Wantagh Park (571-7460).

The water theme parks incorporate Olympic-size swimming pools, diving pools, “kiddie” pools, interactive water-play areas and water slides. In December 2006, the pool at Wantagh Park, which features a beautiful waterfront location, was named "Best Public Pool on Long Island" by the Long Island Press, the weekly newspaper.

The large swimming complex at Christopher Morley Park (571-8113) in Roslyn-North Hills includes an Olympic-size pool, diving tank with boards, and a kiddie pool, all framed by a beautiful wooded preserve behind it. At Nickerson Beach Park (571-7700) in Lido, a 121-acre oceanfront park, there are two small pools as well as kiddie pools.

The pools at Cantiague, Christopher Morley, North Woodmere and Wantagh parks also offer swimming lessons for adults and children over the summer.

Pools are open seven days a week, but hours vary slightly by park, opening at either 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. and closing at either 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. Admission is available on a daily basis at all pools or on a seasonal basis.

Daily fees are as follows: resident adult, $7; resident child (4-17 years of age), $5; senior, disabled, volunteer firefighter, ambulance corps, auxiliary police and veterans, $3; non-resident adult, $20; and non-resident child guest, $15. A Leisure Pass is required for residents to receive the resident rate. The admission fee now includes access to the water slides at the three water theme parks. Seasonal passes are also available for residents with Leisure Passes, with rates as follows: families ($225); individuals ($90); and seniors ($50).

 


 

News 12 Long Island Selects Cantiague Park's Ice Skating Rink
as "Best of Long Island"

News 12 Long Island has selected Cantiague Park’s busy indoor ice skating rink as “Best of Long Island,” a selection made on the basis of viewer nominations and surveys, announced County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi. News 12 reporter Elizabeth Hashagen visited the rink on December 27 to interview Park Manager Mark LaMarr as well as skaters, with the story airing on the 24-hour TV news channel on December 29.

A longtime favorite spot for local skaters and youth hockey teams, Cantiague’s indoor ice skating rink has also played host to Olympic gold medalists such as Nancy Kerrigan, who performed there in 2004, and was the New York Islanders (National Hockey League) practice facility from 1979 to 1992.

The rink is open Monday through Sunday (closed New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day) from September through May and offers approximately 30 hours of public sessions a week, including speed-skating sessions. In addition, the rink has hockey programs, group and private lessons, and figure skating clubs.

Ice rink fees are $5.50 for adults with Leisure Passports and $3.50 for children with Leisure Passports. For patrons without Leisure Passports, the fees are $12 for adults and $8 for children. Seniors, those with disabilities, veterans and volunteer firefighters with Leisure Passports pay a $3 fee. Skate rentals are $4 for each session.
