Statement from Legislator Carrié Solages on Elmont Flooding and Evacuations

(ELMONT, N.Y.) – The following is a statement from Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D – Lawrence) –
“First and foremost, I want to thank the Nassau County Police Department, the Elmont Fire Department, the American Red Cross, New York State and all of our first responders for their efforts to evacuate the Town of Hempstead Housing Authority’s Westover Gardens community on Elmont Road, the co-ops at 1888 Foster Meadow Lane, and other residences neighboring the Elmont Senior Center on Friday, Sept. 29. Thanks to their diligence and professionalism, hundreds of seniors were safely evacuated during a historic rainstorm that caused severe flash flooding throughout our region,” Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D – Lawrence) said.
“However, this is not the first time that this area has experienced severe and disruptive flooding – and with climate change causing more frequent and increasingly severe weather events, it will sadly not be the last time. It is incumbent upon all of us to do all we can to protect the quality of life and peace of mind that our residents deserve,” Legislator Solages said.
“As we pursue all available grant and disaster relief funds available from every level of government to repair flood damage, I will be writing to FEMA to request that this area be declared a federal disaster area and calling for Nassau County to immediately investigate the specific causes of this flooding incident. Once causes and solutions are identified, the County must dedicate significant resources in its forthcoming Capital plan toward completing necessary infrastructure investments which will give our residents the level of safety and peace of mind that they deserve,” Legislator Solages concluded.

Any resident who believes they have a claim against Nassau County related to Friday’s storm should file a Notice of Claim within 90 days at
