Solages on Biden Administration’s Approval of Major Disaster Declaration for September Rainstorm

(MINEOLA, N.Y.) – On Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2023 New York State Governor Kathy Hochul announced her request for a Major Disaster Declaration related to a substantial late-September rainstorm that deluged Nassau County. Today, on Jan. 31, 2024, Governor Hochul announced that the Biden administration has approved the State’s request.

Following today’s news, Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D – Valley Stream) issued the following statement:

“Today’s announcement is a victory for the victims of the historic rainstorms and flash flooding – a destructive weather event that displaced hundreds of senior citizens from the Foster Meadow Lane co-ops and greatly impacted residents across Elmont and Valley Stream last fall. As I saw the devastation with my own eyes when visiting homeowners to survey the damage, many of my constituents felt they no path to being compensated until this declaration was issued,” Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D – Valley Stream) said.

“I thank President Biden, Governor Hochul and all of our partners in government for their responsiveness to the critical need,” Legislator Solages said. “This outcome was made possible through cooperation between multiple levels of government and tireless advocacy by many community stakeholders, and I encourage anyone who was impacted by this storm to take full advantage of the resources that will soon become available to our region.”
