Local Updates:

July Update re: NEW HYDE PARK/GARDEN CITY:

The New Hyde Park Road grade crossing in the Villages of New Hyde Park and Garden City is one of eight street-level crossings along the LIRR Main Line that will be eliminated as part of the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville. The New Hyde Park Road grade crossing currently:

  • poses a safety risk to drivers, pedestrians and LIRR customers
  • contributes to noise and air pollution
  • causes lengthy commutes for drivers and LIRR customers

As trains approach New Hyde Park Station, grade crossing gates are in the down position 32 to 42 percent of the time during AM and PM peak periods, respectively. The need for grade crossing elimination is further illustrated by the six fatal crashes at grade crossing locations in the LIRR Main Line corridor from 2007 to 2017.

The New Hyde Park Road grade crossing is being reconstructed to feature a new, five-lane underpass with pedestrian sidewalks on the east and west sides of the underpass. There will also be a dedicated left-turn lane from southbound New Hyde Park Road to Clinch Avenue.

This reconstructed grade crossing was designed in conjunction with the Village of New Hyde Park and the Village of Garden City and will enhance safety and provide for a quieter and more livable community along the railroad.

What you can expect
In the area of the demolished building at 115 New Hyde Park Road, crews from 3rd Track Constructors will install a new sanitary line and will lay an eight inch, reinforced concrete slab to prepare for the installation of a storm water retention system on 2nd Avenue, between Herkomer Street and New Hyde Park Road.

Beginning Monday, July 22, this portion of 2nd Avenue will be closed for the duration of construction of the New Hyde Park Grade Crossing Elimination Project.

As agreed to with representatives from the Villages, 3TC will provide a one-for-one replacement, inside the footprint of 115 New Hyde Park Road, for the on-street parking spaces impacted by this activity.

Please see the detour map below for information on how to access the parking lot and how to navigate around the road closure.

May 29, 2019 Update from LIRR Community Outreach Team

It’s almost time for the Cherry Lane Bridge Replacement Project weekend “Roll-In”. Out of all of the benefits to be received by the LIRR Expansion Project, LIRR riders and residents along the Main Line corridor will immediately see a change thanks to the seven grade crossing eliminations and seven bridge modifications/replacements.

With the upcoming “roll-in” of the new Cherry Lane Bridge, the LIRR Expansion Project is making a significant leap forward.

In service since 1953, the low-hanging Cherry Lane Bridge has been the site of many accidents over the years as a result of trucks striking the bridge, resulting in train and traffic delays while LIRR crews worked to determine the bridge’s safety and structural stability.

The new bridge will increase the vertical clearance and accommodate the third track, improving LIRR system infrastructure and service reliability, and ensuring that traffic in and around Cherry Lane continues to move without incident.

What is a “roll-in”

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is…priceless. Cherry Lane Bridge will be replaced using a similar method successfully used at LIRR’s Post Avenue Bridge in Westbury, which was completed over a single weekend in October 2017. Take a look here for a time-lapse look at the “roll-in” of the Post Avenue Bridge.

What you can expect

As many area residents are aware, 3TC has been using the area just north of the bridge on Cherry Lane to build the superstructure, and a detour for a limited area has been in place since April.

To prepare for and execute the “roll-in” of the new bridge, however, 3TC will need to close Cherry Lane from Mineola Avenue to Mallard Road from May 31 through the early morning of June 3. The full detour will go in to effect at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. See below for a map of the detour plan.

The area surrounding the closure will remain open to local traffic. Vehicles heading in either direction will be directed to use Old Country Road, Glen Cove Road, Westbury Avenue, and Ellison Avenue to avoid the area.

For those who live in the affected area, flaggers will be strategically placed at each intersection to guide residents to their homes and may be dispatched at any time to assist with navigation around the work.

We also would like to assure you that emergency responders are aware of the closure and the detour plan.

For Westbury area and Carle Place LIRR commuters, on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2, there will be no train service at Carle Place Station and Westbury Station due to the Cherry Lane Bridge Replacement Project. Please use Mineola Station or Merrick Stations for LIRR service. For more information, www.mta.info/lirr or call 511.

April Update - Cherry Lane

Progress is being made on the LIRR Expansion Project and 3rd Track Constructors (3TC) wants to make sure that you’re aware of a significant road closure in Carle Place/Town of North Hempstead, which is needed to accommodate the Cherry Lane Bridge Replacement project.

Beginning on or about April 3, 2019, Cherry Lane will be closed, from the south side of Mineola Avenue to the north side of Atlantic Avenue. The closure will last approximately eight weeks.

Detours, created in coordination with Carle Place officials, have been established to help get around the closure.

  • Vehicles heading in either direction will be directed to use Mineola, Rushmore and Atlantic Avenues to navigate around the closure.
  • Commercial trucks will be redirected away from Cherry Lane at the Northern Parkway exit and at Old Country Road.  Local traffic only will be allowed in the area for the duration of the work.

Please see the map below for local traffic details.

For those who live in the affected area, flaggers will be strategically placed at each intersection to guide residents to their homes and may be dispatched at any time to assist with navigation around the work. In addition, the Town of North Hempstead will institute temporary “no parking” regulations during the construction project, to further alleviate traffic in the area.
