Whether You Ride the LIRR or Not...

  • The Office of Nassau County Comptroller Elaine Phillips has completed a review of all 58 Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) stations in Nassau County and the results are not good.
  • The New York State Comptroller’s Office has released the latest results of its Fiscal Stress Monitoring System, and Nassau County has once again been recognized for its strong fiscal health.

Audits Ensure Fiscal Responsibility, Improve Efficiency

  • Changes to the Department of Public Works (DPW) change order process yielded savings of $17.4 million over the last three years
  • Nassau County Department of Consumer Affairs’ Licensing Division had a backlog of nearly 6,000 applications for business licenses and renewals when Comptroller Phillips launched her audit of the Division. Today, they are up to date. Consumer Affairs also launched a fingerprinting program for home improvement license applicants in response to the audit. 
  • The County’s use of the EZ Pass is saving time and money. 
  • Comptroller Phillips has replaced antiquated cash boxes for Petty Cash and implemented debit-style bank-issued purchasing cards (P-cards) for petty cash, increasing controls and accountability. 
  • The Department of Social Services has improved processes and tightened control over payments to hotels and motels for temporary housing. 
  • Results of the Comptroller's review of the County's payments to Nassau Health Care Corporation (NHCC) over a ten-year period for the County’s portion of certain benefits for employees and retirees of Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC)

Each year, Nassau taxpayers are forced to pay the MTA $36.5 million to care for Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) stations. That’s $100,000 per day, yet many LIRR stations are in major disrepair with inadequate and decaying infrastructure.
