Welcome

Welcome to the Nassau County Department of Consumer Affairs’ official website. The mission of the Department of Consumer Affairs is to ensure that residents of Nassau County are treated fairly in all consumer transactions.

Consumer Complaints are investigated by our Consumer Protection Investigators who work diligently with contractors and businesses to resolve consumer issues.

Our Licensing Department licenses and regulates many businesses, which operate in Nassau County, including home improvement contractors, locksmiths, home services contractors, storage warehouse operators, second-hand precious metal and gem dealers, electronic and home appliance service dealers, scrap metal processors, vehicle dismantlers and junk dealers, drycleaners and laundromats, environmental hazard remediation providers, and health club operators.

The Search Business With Valid Licenses function on our website allows consumers to search for contractors and businesses licensed by Consumer Affairs. Insurance information for the contractors and businesses is also available on our website. If a contractor is not listed, they are not currently licensed by Consumer Affairs. Please contact us if you have any questions. We urge consumers to hire ONLY licensed contractors and businesses.

Our Weights and Measures Division inspects and tests the accuracy of all scales in retail establishments located in Nassau County, to ensure that they are correct. Gas pumps and heating oil delivery trucks are also tested for accuracy and to confirm that the amount of product dispensed is correct.

The Taxi & Limousine Division regulates and issues licenses to “for hire” vehicle drivers (other than Uber and Lyft) and registers “for hire” vehicles, such as prom limos.

Our dedicated bilingual Front Desk staff are available to help consumers with questions and assist with the filing of consumer complaints. They also help contractors and businesses submit their license applications.
