(UNIONDALE, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Olena Nicks (D – Uniondale) proudly joined community advocates and her colleagues in government at LIPA’s Stewart Avenue substation on Monday, June 9 to celebrate the formal renaming of the facility to reflect its true geographical home in the hamlet of Uniondale. Previously, the substation carried the erroneous address of “East Garden City,” which was stricken from the U.S. Census in 2020 after extensive advocacy by community leaders and elected officials who serve Uniondale at multiple levels of government.
“Names are not arbitrary; they are anchors of identity and pride, and they have power. As a proud resident and advocate for the community of Uniondale, the history of our community illustrates this truth,” Legislator Nicks said. “Renaming this substation is an important step toward removing ‘East Garden City’ from our lexicon once and for all, and I was proud to join with the Long Island Power Authority and community advocates to celebrate this key milestone.”
