(WEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Olena Nicks (D – Uniondale) joined Congregation Shaaray Shalom in West Hempstead on Sunday, April 19 to commemorate Yom HaShoah.
During a solemn observance marking the anniversary of the historic 1943 Warsaw ghetto uprising, Legislator Nicks had the privilege of lighting one of six candles illuminated in honor of the 6 million Jews killed during the Holocaust. Attendees heard powerful remarks from Egon Salmon, a Holocaust survivor and one of the last living witnesses to Kristallnacht.
“On Yom HaShoah, we pause to commemorate the lives of the 6 million Jews who were massacred at the hands of Nazi barbarism and hatred,” Legislator Nicks said. “We must do everything within our power to ensure that one of history’s darkest chapters is never forgotten, and I am so thankful to Rabbi Menachem Creditor and Congregation Shaaray Shalom for the opportunity to be a part of such a moving and powerful observance.”
